7 Sneaky Ways to Make Your Small Living Room Look Bigger

We can’t all be fortunate enough to live in a giant house – and let’s face it, some of us just don’t want that anyway. For those of us who live in small homes, studios and apartments, there are unique challenges we face when it comes to decorating.

But the thing is, you don’t need tons of space to create a beautiful, comfortable and inviting living area in your home. You just need a little bit of ingenuity. Here are some of our favorite tips for making your small living room look and feel larger than life:

Hang an over-sized mirror. A big mirror opens up a small space. Try positioning it across from your windows so that it bounces light across the room.

Choose furniture that fits the scale of your living room. Large furniture can easily overpower a small space. Instead of buying a bulky sofa, opt for a sleek loveseat and chairs.

Select light, neutral colors for your walls and furniture. A neutral color palette brightens up the room by reflecting light and expanding the perceived volume of your space.

Strategically place your curtain rods. When installing curtain rods, position them several inches higher than the window frame to create the illusion that your windows are taller.

Go bold with statement pieces. Pillows and throw blankets with vibrant colors and patterns will add style and playfulness to your neutral color scheme.

“Float” your furniture away from the walls. By keeping the furniture centralized, you create space around it that makes the room feel bigger.

Keep the clutter to a minimum. Nothing makes a home feel small like too much clutter. Avoid filling every shelf and open space if you can.

Decorating your home should be fun and exciting – no matter what size it is. Don’t let a small living room prevent you from creating a space that you absolutely love!
